Parents // Newsletter SLC Rings in the New Year with a Blast! (and not just from the shofar)
September 23 was the start of another wonderful SLC tradition. Nearly 200 people came to camp to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. The room was filled with bright happy faces as everyone participated in a camp-style service that was both meaningful and relevant to all. The service included the sounding of the shofar, and many of the children had a chance to give it a try. Of course, Claire and Paul were there to lead the way, and they were joined on the bimah by Adam, Celia, and Jordan.
Following the services, we all participated in Tashlich, the tradition is which we symbolically cast away our sins by throwing pieces of bread into a flowing body of water (the lake!). There were then a variety of activities for all ages, ranging from children's games and songs to yoga and text studies. Afterward, everyone joined together for a festive meal that included lots of apples and honey, to symbolize our wish for a sweet new year.
It was truly a special day that no one will soon forget. Hike-A-Thon A Success!
It was a fantastic day for a hike—cool and crisp, yet just right for a walk in the woods with the leaves painting the hillsides with shades of red, orange and yellow. And all of this in a magical place such as Surprise Lake Camp. Just because the summer is over, it doesn’t mean that the SLC family hibernates until next year. 57 hikers (ages 3 and up) came to camp on Sunday, October 22nd, dressed in hiking clothes and carrying backpacks filled with water, snacks and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. After a welcoming breakfast and listening to the “rules of hiking” by Whammy, we set off. Some of us chose to do the relaxing hike to Cornish and some chose the more challenging Bull Hill. The hikes lasted between 4 and 5 hours and we savored each step of the way, making new friends, catching up with old ones, and enjoying a perfect day in the great outdoors. The best part was that we were doing this to support Surprise Lake Camp scholarships, which made us feel really great knowing that our enjoyment would benefit others. A great big “thank-you” to all who participated and to all that sponsored our hikers. We hope to see even more of you next year! Written by Barbara Zbar
2007 Registration Opens With An Explosion! There can be no greater testimonial about the success of the SLC program than the fact that over 500 registrations for next summer came in BEFORE THE SUMMER OF 2006 WAS OVER!! This is more than last year – it is more than many camps get for an entire year. Mountainview girls first session already has a waiting list, and other areas are not far behind. SLC is the place to be, so don’t get left out – call Sylvie in the office (212-924-3131) before camp fills. Earlybird registration ends on the November 15!
Staff Hiring For 2007
One of the reasons SLC is the best in Jewish camping is the quality of our staff. We attract good people by making camp a great place to work: The pay is better than most camps, we provide more time off than most camps, there are plenty of staff activities and trips, and we work hard to support our staff and listen to their ideas and needs. Not surprisingly, although camp is barely over, the calls and emails about working next year are already coming in. We love the enthusiasm, but staff hiring at SLC doesn’t start until November 1. So mark that date on your calendar, and when it comes, give us a call. Good things will follow.
